Every two months, there is a UI Design challenge hosted by the UI Peeps Discord community. This interactive prototype is my submission for the March and April challenge. The theme was to design an inventory for a fantasy game about a chosen hero on a quest to stop an ancient darkness. In this prompt, "an ancient darkness" sounded ominous, and reminded me of From Software and their dark fantasy titles. The idea of a chosen hero on a quest reminded me of Legend of Zelda, particularly my favorite entry in the series, Windwaker. I decided to combine these two ideas, and design for a dark fantasy seafaring RPG.
I wanted to experiment with an expanding horizontal accordion menu instead of the more conventional tabs you might see in an inventory screen with multiple sections. I think the animation gives it a cool and dynamic look, and the spatial changes will help users remember the position on screen of an item they might be looking for. It also helps keep a reduced cognitive load, showing only the equipment slots and items relevant to the current section.
All of the art and icons are my own, except for the background, which is an illustration from Avowed by Goodname Studio, that I thought fit the feeling I was going for perfectly.
